I would like to thank Frances Eagan for contributing the information links and images for this page - whose relative Thomas Fenton was lost aboard HMS Racoon.
It is worth noting that like many other losses of H.M. Ships and crews during the First World War, the Admiralty in their wisdom failed to inform the relatives of the truth surrounding their loss, which was the case with H.M.S. Racoon. The loss of H.M.S. Racoon was attributed to an enemy torpedo even though at the time it was known than an 'aground' distress signal was sent to Malin Head from 'Racoon'. A subsequent enquiry into the circumstances of the loss was held by the Admiralty.
